A Cocktail a Day

a cocktail a day

May is the gift that keeps on giving. With bank holidays here, there and everywhere it is just the perfect month. That would be if we were allowed to go to the pub or anywhere with cocktails on the menu and a garden to drink them in.

This weekend is meant to be really hot. I know British weather changes every five minutes but I’m writing this post in the garden while the sun is beaming a lovely 26 degree heat so my hopes are high for some lasting sunshine.

I miss going to pubs so much and even little bars. I love choosing a little cocktail to start a day of drinking my way through to tomorrow so i thought I’d make some myself.

I’m going to name seven of my favourite cocktails to get you through the week and exactly what you will need to make them.

Your holiday starts now…

Number one is a Passion fruit Porn star Martini. A personal fave of mine as I once went out and order a tree. Yes… a tree of Porn star Martinis. It was great and could drink them everyday. Here’s what you will need to make this tropical favourite:

  • 60mL Vodka
  • 30mL Passionfruit Puree
  • 30mL Vanilla Syrup
  • 15mL Fresh Lime Juice
  • Prosecco or Champagne

I didn’t really follow instructions for any of the cocktails that I made. For this one, I just threw everything together into a cocktail shaker and poured into a glass (except for the Prosecco which I poured into a little shot glass).

Cocktail number two has to be a Strawberry Daiquiri. Not just a normal one but a frozen one! This is a definite holiday cocktail; perfect for sipping round the pool. That is until you try and get up. It taste like juice but will have you swaying all over the place. Here’s what you will need:

  • 6 Ice cubes
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 110g frozen strawberries
  • 30ml lime juice
  • 120ml lemon juice
  • 180ml rum
  • 60ml fizzy lemonade

This list of ingredients is enough to make a batch of 8 strawberry daiquiris. I’ve only ever made them in bulk because the second I sit down with mine, everyone wants one. Especially in this heat!

Cocktail number three is a cosmopolitan. Better known really as the ultimate vodka cranberry. This is so refreshing for a cocktail but if not done right can turn out quite sour! Here’s everything you need to make yourself a Cosmo (or two):

  • 120ml vodka
  • 60ml orange liqueur
  • 60ml cranberry juice
  • juice of 1 lime

Number four on the weekly cocktail list is a Mojito. This is a classic summer drink. The ingredients are very random but apparently when mixed together compliment the rum and make it a popular choice. Here’s a list of ingredients you will need to make yourself one:

  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • small handful mint leaves
  • 60ml white rum
  • soda water, to taste

Cocktail number five is a Long Island ice tea. I do love this cocktail but only now and again! It is by far the strongest cocktail of them all as it has a lot of alcohol mixed together all in the one lil glass. Some may say the perfect drink… here’s what you will need to make a batch of four as I’ve only ever made a large jug of this:

  • 50ml vanilla vodka (Absolut Vanilia is probably best)
  • 50ml London dry gin
  • 50ml tequila
  • 50ml rum
  • 50ml triple sec (which is an orange flavoured liqueur)
  • 50-100ml fresh lime juice
  • ice
  • 500ml Coca-Cola
  • 2 limes, cut into wedges

Number six on the cocktail list is a tequila sunrise. I drank this cocktail literally everyday on holiday. It actually looks like a little sunrise in a glass. As the orange juice and syrup mix together, they make red, yellow and orange which swirls around the glass. So pretty! Here’s how to make a tequila sunrise:

  • 2 tsp grenadine
  • ice
  • 50ml tequila
  • 1 tbsp triple sec
  • 1 large orange, or 2 small ones, juiced
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • 1 cocktail cherry

Finally cocktail number seven to complete your week is a giant jug of sangria! I don’t know if this is actually classed as a cocktail but I have always assumed it is. I love all the fruit that is chopped up in it and can honestly say it is the only time I will ever drink red wine! Here’s how it’s is best made:

These ingredients make enough sangria for six people!

  • 2 oranges, chopped
  • 2 pears, chopped
  • 2 lemons, 1 chopped, 1 juiced
  • 200g red berries, chopped (we used strawberries and cherries)
  • 3 tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ice
  • 750ml bottle light red wine
  • 100ml Brandy
  • 300ml sparkling water

I hope you enjoyed reading this little cocktail menu and I hope you enjoy drinking them just as much!
